Translating Abstracting Proofreading Editing

Free Translation Services Guide!

"Getting it Right," the American Translators Association's guide for consumers of translation services. This booklet (in PDF format) is extremely useful for helping you to prepare your document for translation, and to evaluate the quality of the translation services you are using. To download the booklet, click here.

For documents that were not translated or abstracted by IMS, we can proofread the document provided that the original translation or abstraction was performed by a certified translator, or, in the case of languages for which no certification is available, by a qualified translator. (Iowa Multilingual Solutions provides complimentary proofreading services on all translation and abstracting projects that IMS performs.)

If the translated document submitted to us for proofreading is of such inferior quality that a major revision of the translation is in order, we will notify you and wait for your instructions before proceeding. Please note that most translations performed by amateur translators are usually not of acceptable quality, in which case it is often more cost-effective to have a professional translator translate the document again from scratch.

What is the difference between proofreading and editing?

bulletA proofreader checks just the spelling and punctuation of the translated text for accuracy, with no reference to the original document. Minor editorial changes may also be performed. Choose this option when you are sure that the translation is accurate and only needs checking for spelling and punctuation.
bulletAn editor compares the translation with the original for accuracy, and makes any changes that are needed, including spelling and punctuation. Choose this option when minor changes have been made to the original which need to be incorporated into the translation, or when there are substantive corrections to be made to the translation.
bulletNOTE: Most translations done by amateur translators are usually not up to professional standards. In those cases, a professional translator/editor may recommend that you have the document re-translated as the most cost-effective measure.

For urgent jobs (less than 1 day's turnaround per 5000 words of source text), or to cancel a previously confirmed event, please call Iowa Multilingual Solutions at 515-255-5241. Cancellations are subject to the Terms and Conditions of any Agreement between you and Iowa Multilingual Solutions, LLC, for provision of these services.

**Our normal rates apply to source text provided to us electronically in any Microsoft Office format for Windows (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, FrontPage, Publisher, Access). Higher rates apply for PDF and other electronic formats. If your source text is only available in hard copy, please scan the text and upload it as a PDF file. No hard copy will be accepted for abstraction without prior written approval of Iowa Multilingual Solutions, LLC.
